Overview
The Senior Livestock Development Officer will provide vision and strategic thinking on animal production and health related matters for the development and implementation of FAO’s programmes of work, with a focus on sustainable and resilient agrifood systems and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Plans, manages, and/or leads highly specialized or multidisciplinary teams.
- Analyses global and country specific requirements and relevant technical issues.
- Implements and monitors programmes of work.
- Conducts, designs and oversees research and analysis activities.
- Provides technical and policy advice to Members and technical support to Decentralized Offices.
- Leads and/or collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development and knowledge sharing activities.
- Represents the Organization at international meetings and conferences.
- Leads and/or participates in resource mobilization activities.
- Provides vision and strategic thinking on animal production and health related matters.
- Provides strategic support and leadership on One Health and related issues.
- Provides expertise on strategies, approaches, technologies in livestock production and health for emergency preparedness and during emergency response operations.
- Provides support to Member countries in implementing global and region-specific strategies to control and eradicate Transboundary Animal Diseases, zoonotic diseases, and antimicrobial resistance.
- Implements and monitors FAO programmes of work as they relate to sustainable livestock development.
- Provides advice support to Members in implementing the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation, the One Health in Agrifood Systems Framework, the FAO Animal Health Strategy.
- Supports resource mobilization consistent with RNE's work plan and strategic vision and the FAO Strategic Framework.
- Advocates and promotes the work of FAO animal production and health including One Health with governments and partners.
- Ensure effective liaison, integration and linkage on animal production, animal health, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and One Health between headquarters’, Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) and RNE.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Experience
- Ten years of relevant experience in policy and technical work related to animal health, infectious disease management, animal production, and animal genetic resources management including regulatory frameworks, standard setting, and support for policy and strategy development.
- Proven expertise to support Members in the identification, formulation, and implementation of projects and programmes.
- Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is essential.
- Extent and relevance of knowledge or experience in infectious disease management at national and international level, in multidisciplinary approaches (theoretical and practical) to disease prevention and management.
- Extent and relevance of experience in planning and implementation of programmes related to animal health in development organizations.
- Extent and relevance of experience in planning and implementation of programmes related to livestock production and health.
- Ability to mobilize resources.
- Extent and relevance of experience in organizing international meetings, seminars and training courses.
Qualifications
• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Animal Sciences, Veterinary Medicine or Epidemiology, or related field.
