Overview

Provide analytical and technical support on agribusiness and value chains development, including market functioning and linking smallholders to markets. The role supports the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of investment policies, strategies, programmes, and projects.


Key Responsibilities
  • Provide analytical and technical support on agribusiness and value chains development.
  • Support the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of investment policies, strategies, programmes and projects.
  • Participate in and lead multidisciplinary teams to assist governments in identifying and preparing investment and finance support initiatives.
  • Provide technical expertise for the preparation of studies and strategies.
  • Support the development of inclusive and sustainable food systems.
  • Formulate and deliver capacity development strategies and activities.
  • Prepare documents in accordance with FAO, governments and financing partners' requirements.
  • Provide support in task organization, selection of consultants, preparation of terms of reference and ensuring quality of outputs.
  • Promote international cooperation and collaboration leading to new investment opportunities.
  • Establish, promote and maintain relationships with relevant Strategic Programmes, FAO technical units and Decentralized Offices.
  • Participate in resource mobilization activities.
  • Provide guidance and advice to junior staff.
  • Contribute to the analysis of selected agrifood value chains.
  • Assess constraints and opportunities for investments along selected value chains.
  • Identify and analyse agricultural investment-related policy issues and provide agribusiness related solutions.
  • Engage with private sector stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of knowledge products.
  • Develop public-private platforms and design strategies to strengthen the enabling environment for scaling up investments.
Required Experience
  • Seven years of relevant experience in the practical application of value chain analysis and development, agribusiness and market development, agro-processing, including experience in the formulation and implementation of agrifood investment operations in developing countries.
  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in producing analytical studies, feasibility studies and programme evaluation, including participation in public-private policy dialogue to promote investments within agribusiness development, value chains, agrifood markets, agrifood logistics and agribusiness financing.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in participating in multidisciplinary teams for the preparation of strategies and sector studies, as well as formulation, implementation support or evaluation of food security, agriculture, rural development, natural resources management and agro-processing investment and finance support solutions, with focus on financial and economic aspects.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in the design, implementation support and evaluation of investment operations with FAO's main development partners, in particular the World Bank (WB), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as well as other partner international financial institutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with government officials, development partners and other country stakeholders.
Qualifications

• Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in agriculture, agribusiness, business administration, economics, agricultural economics or a closely related field.

Languages Required
• Working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).
Languages Preferred
• Knowledge of the context, as well as partners and institutions of the Near East, North Africa, Europe and Central Asia region would be an important asset. • Working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of French or Arabic would be an asset.
Contract Duration
Fixed-term: two years with possibility of extension
