Overview
The Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) Intern will support a community-based VESL program for adult students with varying English proficiencies. The role aims to empower students with literacy, language, and confidence for daily life in the US, enhancing resource accessibility, employment opportunities, and self-sufficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Setting up the classroom
- Making copies
- Answering clients’ questions regarding language and culture
- Assisting with classroom activities
- Data entry
- Administering placement assessments during student registration appointments
- Attending and observing classes
- Assisting VESL Instructor with enrollment, coordination, and implementation of classes
- Contacting students to confirm availability
- Navigating client barriers to education
- Communicating with local adult education services
- Supporting teachers in preparation of student materials
- Collecting data
- Assisting students with class assignments
- Helping integrate digital literacy in the classroom
- Creating a welcoming environment
- Providing supervision for young children when present during registration appointments
- Adhering to IRC policies on confidentiality and client privacy
- Practicing sensitivity to cultural and personality differences
Required Experience
- An interest in or experience with teaching generally and teaching ESL specifically
- Exposure to global environments and languages is a plus
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree, or recent graduate
- (TESOL, TEFL, or related field, and/or working towards receiving TESOL/TEFL certification is a plus)
- Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to vulnerable populations
- Ability to adapt to different learning skills and environments
- Patience, understanding, and flexibility
- Engaged in learning about the IRC (mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts)
