Overview
Provide medical escort services for beneficiaries, ensuring their well-being and adherence to medical protocols during travel. This role involves pre-departure preparations, in-transit monitoring, and post-arrival handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Verify passport, visa, and practicing license validity.
- Familiarize with beneficiary's medical files and plan with IOM medical team.
- Ensure MEDIF/MEDA submission and airline approval.
- Examine trip aspects including flight duration and medical facility access.
- Agree on a written Medical Escort Plan (MEP).
- Obtain emergency contact information.
- Review and request medical escort kit supplies.
- Familiarize with medication and dosing regimen.
- Prepare necessary medical forms.
- Ensure mobile phone with international roaming is available.
- Introduce self and brief beneficiary and family on MEP.
- Ensure beneficiary is fit to travel prior to departure.
- Perform fitness-to-travel check before each travel segment.
- Board with beneficiary, assisting with embarkation and disembarkation.
- Introduce self to cabin staff and engage their assistance.
- Provide medical and non-medical support to other beneficiaries as needed.
- Stay in close proximity to the beneficiary throughout the movement.
- Follow MEP and monitor beneficiary's condition every 4 hours.
- Ensure beneficiary maintains adequate hydration and avoids alcohol/caffeine.
- Encourage beneficiary movement and leg exercises.
- Monitor blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiratory rate for cardiac/respiratory patients.
- Monitor blood oxygen saturation using pulse oximetry.
- Use portable blood glucose monitors for diabetic beneficiaries.
- Ensure medications are taken as scheduled and oxygen is properly delivered.
- Bring medical emergencies to the attention of cabin crew and captain.
- Document clinical observations and interventions in the IOM Observation and Intervention Report (MH06-B).
- Notify IOM staff of travel deviations or unplanned hospitalizations.
- Stay with the patient until released by IOM staff or medical personnel.
- Report to IOM staff on arrival at the Port of Entry (POE).
- Stay at the same hotels as beneficiaries if same-day connections are not possible.
- Contact local IOM staff for advice and assistance if beneficiary's condition deteriorates at transit point.
- Hand over escorted beneficiary(ies) to a responsible entity upon arrival.
- Ensure beneficiary understands onward travel connections.
- Fill in Migrant Handover Notification Form (MH06-D) and get it signed.
- Provide medical records and Observation and Intervention Report to beneficiary or guardian if receiving party is not a medical professional.
- Arrange accommodation near beneficiary if handover is the day after arrival.
- Ensure return of special medical equipment.
- Submit handover forms, escort reports, checklist, medical escort kit, and mobile phone to IOM El Salvador within 1 week of return.
- Remain communicable by phone and email until at least 24 hours after handover.
- Honour information requests regarding travel-related incidents or complaints.
- Perform other assigned duties.
Required Experience
- Minimum of four years of clinical experience;
- Clinical speciality linked to the medical profile of the escorted beneficiary
Qualifications
- University Degree in Medicine or Nursing from an accredited academic institution;
- University Degree in Medicine from an accredited academic institution with Specialization in Psychiatrists, Cardiologists, Internists, Intensivists, Anesthetists, Pediatricians or General/Family Physicians are invited to submit their expression of interest
- A valid license to practice in the country of his/her residence/citizenship;
- Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS);
