Overview

Serves as a regional lead/focal point for economic, social, and cultural rights within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Contributes to evidence-based work, policy development, and advocacy.


Key Responsibilities
  • Serves as regional lead/focal point for economic, social and cultural rights.
  • Ensures development of evidence-based work, policy papers, legal briefs, and advocacy messaging.
  • Reviews, monitors and evaluates implementation of workplans and international human rights instruments.
  • Prepares human rights parts of reports for the General Assembly, HRC, etc.
  • Engages with stakeholders including UN agencies, national officials, NHRIs and Civil Society.
  • Works with UN and non-governmental programmes to integrate human rights.
  • Provides advice to OHCHR senior leadership and makes recommendations.
  • Makes contact with other sectors of the UN, international organizations and governments.
  • Assists governments, NHRIs, civil society and other stakeholders to develop and implement training and education.
  • Serves as team leader with responsibility for work coordination and administrative functions.
  • Trains and supervises new/junior staff.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Required Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, economics, public policy or related area is required. At least five years of experience in the field of cultural rights is required. At least two years of experience in management of a multidisciplinary team at the United Nations or a similar setting is desirable. Experience working with governments and national stakeholders (NHRIs, civil society, others), including through providing technical assistance and capacity-building, is desirable.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, economics, data science, public policy or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
