Overview
Support the start up and operationalization of a national shrimp hatchery, including training national staff to independently manage operations according to international best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and initiate the fully functional RAS within the hatchery.
- Ensure proper operation and maintenance of the recirculating aquaculture system (RAS).
- Apply appropriate biosecurity, environmental control, and animal welfare standards.
- Prepare and hand over a commissioning and operational readiness checklist.
- Support the preparation of broodstock tanks and protocols.
- Oversee the preparation of broodstock nutrition, feeding regimes, and health management protocols.
- Develop and implement broodstock receiving, quarantine, acclimation and health screening protocols.
- Provide appropriate care for the broodstock upon arrival.
- Support the preparation of the hatchery’s spawning operations.
- Provide structured, hands on training and mentoring to national hatchery technicians.
- Promote adherence to standardized protocols and good aquaculture practices.
- Maintain accurate technical records.
- Develop and hand over a core set of hatchery SOPs and log sheets and train staff on their use.
- Provide regular technical updates to FAO and the national technical team.
- Contribute to adaptive management through evidence based recommendations.
Required Experience
At least ten (10) years of relevant experience in shrimp aquaculture, with demonstrated expertise in managing penaeid shrimp maturation systems.
Qualifications
Advanced university degree from an institution recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU)/UNESCO in fisheries, aquaculture, agriculture or a related field; Consultants with a bachelor's degree need two additional years of relevant professional experience. For PSAs: University degree from an institution recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU)/UNESCO in fisheries, aquaculture, agriculture or a related field.
