Overview

The Communication Officer will lead project communications, visibility, knowledge management and learning for the Solar Cooling Project in Kenya. The role ensures that evidence generated is captured, translated into knowledge products, and shared with stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement the project’s communication and knowledge management workplan.
  • Maintain a communications calendar.
  • Coordinate communication inputs from project staff, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Write and edit news articles, case studies, human interest stories, policy briefs, newsletters, reports, speeches, and social media content.
  • Translate technical project information into clear and engaging messages.
  • Collect stories, photographs, quotations, and other content from project activities.
  • Establish and maintain a repository for project reports and communication materials.
  • Document project results, lessons learned, good practices, and challenges.
  • Develop knowledge products.
  • Organize learning sessions, webinars, and exchanges.
  • Develop and update project content for the UNDP Kenya website and social media platforms.
  • Prepare press releases, media briefs, and information packages.
  • Support media interviews, field visits, and engagement with journalists.
  • Monitor media coverage.
  • Support the planning and delivery of workshops, campaigns, launches, webinars, field visits, and stakeholder forums.
  • Prepare presentations, talking points, briefing notes, event materials, and post-event summaries.
  • Tailor communication materials for various stakeholders.
  • Ensure all communication products comply with branding and visibility requirements.
  • Review project materials for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and accessibility.
  • Guide project partners and service providers on communication standards.
  • Track communication results.
  • Gather feedback from stakeholders and recommend improvements.
  • Prepare regular communication and knowledge management updates.
Required Experience

At least seven (7) years of relevant professional experience in communication, journalism, public relations, development communication, or knowledge management. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing communication or knowledge management plans. Experience documenting project results, lessons learned, good practices, and human-interest stories. Experience managing websites, social media platforms, or digital communication campaigns. Experience supporting stakeholder events, media engagements, workshops, webinars, or field visits. Experience communicating projects related to climate change, renewable energy, agriculture, food systems, sustainable cooling, or private sector development. Experience working on donor-funded or international development programmes.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, Development Communication, Knowledge Management, or a closely related field. Candidates with qualifications in Development Studies, Environmental Studies or Climate Change may also be considered where they demonstrate strong specialization in communication and knowledge management.

Remuneration
A UN Volunteer receives a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) per month and is paid at the end of each month to cover housing, utilities, transportation, communications and other basic needs. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are provided a settling-in-grant (SIG) at the start of the assignment and in the event of a permanent reassignment to another duty station. UNV provides life, health, permanent disability insurances as well as assignment travel, annual leave, full integration in the UN security framework (including residential security reimbursements). UN Volunteers are paid Daily Subsistence Allowance at the UN rate for official travels, flight tickets for the final repatriation travel (if applicable). A resettlement allowance is paid for satisfactory service at the end of the assignment.
