Overview
The Environmental Affairs Officer will coordinate and manage actions on environmental issues, primarily implementing, monitoring, and revising the mission's Environmental Management System in accordance with the UN Environment Strategy for Peace Operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake regular environmental inspections and provide recommendations.
- Conduct environmental assessments and surveys, including EIAs and baseline studies.
- Maintain a record of environmental issues and actions.
- Liaise with relevant sections for updates on hazardous substances.
- Investigate pollution and contamination reports.
- Report and recommend measures to prevent or mitigate environmental problems.
- Advise on environmental issues arising from assessments, studies, and plans.
- Support the mission in implementing environmental policy and identifying needs for guidance.
- Coordinate the mission’s environmental action plan and assist in developing management plans.
- Ensure timely submission of environmental data to relevant systems.
- Coordinate the drafting of the Environmental Emergency Preparedness Plan.
- Manage environmental activities and coordinate team efforts.
- Participate in the administration and recruitment of personnel.
- Promote awareness on environmental issues and provide briefings.
- Deliver environmental capacity building activities.
- Mainstream environment into mission-level SOPs and guidance.
- Engage with contractors on environmental responsibilities.
- Liaise on environmental issues with local authorities, UN bodies, and regional organizations.
- Carry out other tasks to support the DOS Environmental Policy and mission objectives.
Required Experience
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the environmental management field with a national government/administration, a large firm or international organization is required. Experience in evaluation and oversight of environmental compliance is required. Experience in environmental project planning is desirable. Experience working in Haiti for the UN or an international NGO is desirable.
Qualifications
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental management, environmental science, environmental engineering, or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
