Overview

The Mechanical Engineer will lead the construction phase of infrastructure projects in mechanical engineering, ensuring quality, budget, and schedule compliance, and promoting resilient, safe, and sustainable construction aligned with UNOPS standards.


Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage daily construction and supervision activities in the area of specialty.
  • Monitor construction progress and contractor/supervision performance.
  • Identify and report potential delays, risks, and cost overruns.
  • Recommend and implement corrective actions.
  • Supervise construction works and supervision company activities in the area of specialty.
  • Review and evaluate contractor payment claims, variation orders, and extension requests.
  • Maintain adequate project documentation.
  • Represent UNOPS in site meetings, coordination forums, and stakeholder consultations.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination with contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Enforce UNOPS quality standards and project-specific quality assurance plans.
  • Conduct periodic inspections and material testing.
  • Review contractor quality control procedures.
  • Prepare and track quality control documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance to contractors and field personnel.
  • Contribute to the implementation of HSSE management systems.
  • Support periodic safety inspections and risk assessments.
  • Promote environmental sustainability and integrate 'green construction' practices.
  • Monitor and report incidents, near misses, and corrective actions.
  • Track project progress against work plans, milestones, and performance targets.
  • Prepare detailed weekly and monthly reports.
  • Support the preparation of Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs), contract closure documentation, and project completion reports.
  • Maintain comprehensive site records.
  • Participate in project review meetings.
  • Support the organization and facilitation of training and learning sessions.
  • Participate in knowledge sharing initiatives and Communities of Practice (CoPs).
Required Experience

Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in construction, supervision, or project management of vertical infrastructure in the mechanical engineering area. Experience in project documentation, report writing, and technical communication. Proficiency in using collaboration and productivity tools (e.g., MS Office, G-Suite, Autocad, Revit and BIM, etc.) and web-based management systems. Desirable: Experience in design, construction, and supervision of hospital infrastructure installations. Experience in project management using BIM and Construction Management tools. Experience in design, supervision, construction, and/or maintenance of hospital infrastructure. Experience working in multicultural environments or UN system organizations in developing countries. Experience in development or humanitarian contexts.

Qualifications

Required Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Industrial Installations Engineering, with 2 years of relevant experience. Master's degree (or equivalent) in any of the above fields will be valued. Desirable: Recognized professional certification at national or international level in Engineering, Project Management, or Construction Management. Recognized professional certification at national or international level in specialized mechanical systems for hospital infrastructure.
