UN Women: English Copy Editor (Retainer), Home based, International Consultant

Overview

UN Women is seeking an English copy editor to provide editorial services for its publications and communication needs, both for internal and external audiences. The consultant will be engaged on a retainer basis when required.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide editing, proofreading, and rewriting services for knowledge products and publications.
• Make necessary revisions based on the UN editorial style manual and UN Women Editorial Style Guide.
• Copyedit, proofread, identify information gaps, restructure, and rewrite as needed.
• Correct spelling mistakes, typos, and ensure appropriate grammar and syntax.
• Ensure consistent style and formatting, correct use of English, and maintain authors’ writing style.
• Ensure coherence and consistency in writing, appropriate positioning and numbering of boxes, figures, and tables.
• Ensure consistent font usage, appropriate use of italicized and bolded words.
• Ensure all footnotes, sources, and references are complete and consistent.
• Thoroughly review annexes as per UN publication guidelines.
• Prepare a complete table of Contents and Acronyms if needed.
• Proofread designed layout files to ensure completeness.

Required Experience

At least 5 years (Master’s degree) and 7 years (bachelor’s degree) of professional work experience in editing, copyediting, and proofreading is required. Proven record in editing knowledge products and communications materials for external audience, including but not limited to reports, publications, news articles, feature stories, policy briefs, and advocacy notes is required. Experience in writing and editing for international development and/or other UN agency documents is an asset. Familiarity with gender equality and women’s issues is desired.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree preferably in English Literature, Journalism, or related field; or A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
