Overview

Internship opportunity with the Human Rights Treaties Branch supporting the activities of human rights treaty bodies. The role involves research, analysis, and administrative support related to treaty body functions and capacity building.


Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare country and legal analysis and draft legal background papers for human rights treaty bodies.
  • Conduct research into and draft reports on the jurisprudence of the treaty bodies.
  • Assist with the handling of individual communications received under treaty body complaints procedures.
  • Provide support in relation to inter-state communications.
  • Assist in the preparation of Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) country visits.
  • Take notes during sessions/pre-sessions and provide administrative support.
  • Provide input to outreach and information tasks, including the Branch newsletter.
  • Support the work of the Universal Human Rights Index (UHRI) and treaty body documentation databases.
  • Conduct research and develop training exercises for capacity building activities.
  • Prepare the Weekly Human Rights Treaties Branch Update.
  • Assist with preparation of reports and background papers for the General Assembly, Human Rights Council, and annual meeting of Chairpersons.
  • Support the organization of training activities and development of relevant training material.
  • Assist with evaluation of project proposals for funding.
Required Experience

Relevant coursework in business administration, management, strategic communications and design, project management, public administration, law and legal administration (criminal justice), or human resources management. Open to a broad range of educational/project/volunteering/research experience backgrounds.

Qualifications

Minimum educational qualification is a High School Diploma. Must be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Languages Required
Fluency in English or French is required.
Languages Preferred
Knowledge of the other working language (English or French) is an asset. Knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
Contract Duration
Minimum of 3 months and maximum of 6 months.
Work Modality
Internships are available in full-time and part-time and can be conducted remote or in-person. The duration and modality can be adjusted on request of the successful candidate.
